Photometry of four binary subdwarf B stars and the nature of their unseen companion stars
We present lightcurves of four binary subdwarf B stars, Ton 245, Feige 11, PG1432+159 and PG1017−086. We also present new spectroscopic data for PG1017−086 from which we derive its orbital period, P = 0.073d, and the mass function, fm = 0.0010±0.0002M⊙. This is the shortest period for an sdB binary measured to-date. The values of P and fm for the other sdB binaries have been published elsewhere...

Plant immune responses are usually accompanied by the production of extracellular superoxide at and surrounding infection sites1–3. Extracellular reactive oxygen intermediates (ROIs) in plants were proposed to drive programmed cell death correlated with disease resistance (the hypersensitive response). ROIs derived from this oxidative burst are generated by plasma membrane NADPH oxidases, ancho...
متن کاملThe subdwarf luminosity function
Using data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Early Data Release and SuperCOS-MOS Sky Survey scans of POSS-I plates we identify a sample of ∼2600 subdwarfs using reduced proper motion methods and strict selection criteria. This forms one of the largest and most reliable samples of candidate subdwarfs known, and enables us to determine accurate luminosity functions along many different lines of s...
متن کاملA fresh look at the wolf-pack theory of companion-animal dog social behavior.
A popular perspective on the social behavior of dogs in multiple-dog households sees the dogs' behavior as reflecting the sociobiological laws of the rigidly structured dominance hierarchy that has been described for wolf packs. This view suggests that aggression problems among dogs are natural expressions of conflict that arise whenever dominance status is in contention. One recommended soluti...
